Eliminating clutter is symbolized in this realistic classical-style painting of Apollo flying through the sky with winged sandals, wearing flowing terracotta drapery, his muscular form illuminated against a backdrop of blue sky and clouds.

Clearing Clutter Before the New Year

As Thanksgiving rolls to an end, and with Christmas less than a month ahead, 2026 calls out to us — louder and clearer. While we’re grateful for the holiday season, it’s also the perfect moment to release the clutter that has quietly settled into our lives.

In other words: Do your spring cleaning now. Yes — now, before the New Year arrives.

After all, if you’re ready to welcome a new year in with clarity, peace, and purpose, you must be willing to let go of the old to make space for the new. What is that saying: out with the old, in with the new, or vice versa?

Of course, easier said than done. And I know.

I’m ready to remove clutter from my life, too — physical and digital.

And yes, digital clutter is real. Believe it or not, it’s also one of the most draining forms of clutter.

From endless emails to forgotten downloads, duplicate photos, text messages, apps, and social media overload — our digital clutter can compound rapidly if we’re not careful.

Remember, it is weight — a heavy load. And it’s baggage that we would do well to leave behind long before the clock strikes midnight on December 31.

To understand clutter more deeply, I asked ChatGPT for a definition on clutter. Here are the results:

What Is Clutter?

Clutter is anything that:

  • No longer serves a purpose
  • No longer brings joy
  • Distracts you mentally
  • Drains your physical or emotional energy
  • Prevents you from functioning at your best

Top 10 Things People Hold Onto (Often Without Realizing It)

Whether in your business, career, or personal life, clutter takes many forms:

  1. Old papers, receipts, and notebooks.
  2. Past projects that will never be revived.
  3. Duplicate files, downloads, and emails.
  4. Outdated clothes or décor.
  5. Unfinished tasks you feel guilty about.
  6. Relationships or obligations that no longer align.
  7. Ideas you’ll “get to someday”.
  8. Digital overwhelm — apps, photos, notifications.
  9. Emotional clutter from old hurts or regrets.
  10. Physical items that represent an old identity.

But — Why Do We Hold onto Clutter?

Back to AI, and here are the top 10 reasons people resist letting go:

  1. Nostalgia.
  2. Fear of needing it later.
  3. Guilt for letting go.
  4. Overwhelm.
  5. Lack of time.
  6. Sentimental attachment.
  7. Avoidance of making decisions.
  8. Identity tied to old items.
  9. Unresolved emotions.
  10. A belief that more equals security.

We have to realize that clutter is not our friend. It does more damage than good, and I asked AI: Why? Here are its responses:

How Clutter Negatively Impacts You
  • It drains mental energy.
  • It suppresses creativity.
  • It triggers stress.
  • It slows productivity.
  • It creates decision fatigue.
  • It weighs down your spirit.
  • It steals your time.
  • It dulls inspiration.
  • It reduces motivation.
  • It keeps you living in the past.

Now that we know what clutter is, and why we hold onto it, it’s pertinent to know how to let it go, right? That is our goal, our touchdown.

Strategies for Removing Clutter Before the New Year

Here are action steps to start — without overwhelm:

  1. Start with the Smallest Space — not the biggest: Momentum begins with small wins.
  2. Use the 12-Minute Rule: Set a timer. Clean one drawer, one folder, or one surface.
  3. Choose One Category Per Day: Emails today. Bath products tomorrow. Files the next.
  4. Apply the “Use It or Release It” Test: Ask yourself: Have I used this in the past 12 months?
  5. Reduce Digital Overwhelm:
    • Unsubscribe from unread newsletters
    • Delete duplicate photos
    • Create simple folders in your email
    • Remove apps you haven’t opened this year
  6. Remove Emotional Guilt: A gift fulfilled its purpose the moment it brought you joy.
  7. Drop the Fantasy Self: Let go of items that represent the version of you you’re “supposed” to be.
  8. Donate, Recycle, or Digitize: Release physically — keep the memory if you must.
  9. Set a “Clutter-Free Hour” Once a Week: Routine prevents relapse.
  10. Celebrate Each Release: Letting go is an act of courage.

At the same, we need to know how getting rid of our stuff brings us joy. That will inspire us to take action sooner than later.

The Joy of Becoming Clutter-Free

When clutter leaves… something beautiful happens.

You breathe easier.
Your mind clears.
Your energy returns.
Your creativity opens.
You become productive again.
You rediscover peace.

Like a wilted plant receiving water — you bloom.

You’re no longer weighed down, but uplifted — light-footed, almost as if you had Apollo’s winged sandals.

You float like a butterfly… without the sting.

And most of all:

You reclaim your time. Your space. Your clarity. Your joy.

As 2025 comes to a poignant end, let’s vow to remove clutter. Not all at once — but bit by bit, piece by piece.

And as you decide what to do with your clutter, here are a few gentle tips to guide you:

  • Donate to someone who needs it
  • Repurpose what you can
  • Toss what is beyond repair
  • Recycle responsibly
  • Digitize important documents

Now take off — fly free, and soar high. A clutter-free year awaits!
