Time to Break Up—and Let the Addictions Go

The holidays barely have time to breathe before they’re replaced—nearly stomped out—as retailers race toward the next sale. One celebration blends into the next until you’re not quite sure what season you’re in anymore. You didn’t imagine it. But one thing is certain, they play on your addictions. Addictions occur also

Welcome!

As an award-winning journalist, historian, writer, and online entrepreneur, I’ve dedicated my life to sharing stories that shape our world. I believe in the power of words to convey dreams, ideas, and experiences. My journey as a writer began in an extraordinary childhood as an Army brat, experiencing the harmonious world Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., envisioned—a foundation that still informs my work today.

A horizontal, realistic photograph of an older African American man in his 50s working at his office desk while viewing stock charts on his computer screen. A small 5-year-old boy, representing his inner child, gently leans over his shoulder and watches the screen with him. The warm office setting and their shared focus symbolize reflection, guidance, and the connection between past and present self.

Why Your Inner Child Matters in 2026

As we move into 2026, the countdown already feels like sand slipping through our fingers — but let’s make sure we don’t leave our inner child behind. Bring her (or him) with you. Psychologists say our inner child is the foundation of our essence — who we are, what we do,

Eliminating clutter is symbolized in this realistic classical-style painting of Apollo flying through the sky with winged sandals, wearing flowing terracotta drapery, his muscular form illuminated against a backdrop of blue sky and clouds.

Clearing Clutter Before the New Year

As Thanksgiving rolls to an end, and with Christmas less than a month ahead, 2026 calls out to us — louder and clearer. While we’re grateful for the holiday season, it’s also the perfect moment to release the clutter that has quietly settled into our lives. In other words: Do your

Pillars of Salt: Escaping Regret and Fear of Tomorrow

Regret? Looking back? Not living in the present moment? It seems like that these themes kept surfacing in recent posts by thought leaders I respect and enjoy following. Looking back reminded me of Lot’s wife, turned into a pillar of salt. Thought of that image always made me shudder. Who wants

My Dog Ain’t in That Fight: Boundaries Matter

When I was working at a nonprofit, I had a colleague who often said: “My dog ain’t in that fight.” Words of wisdom, with a Louisiana flair, from an elder. And words to heed in our business, career, and personal life. Often, we’re tempted to intervene in controversy or confrontation that

Sink or Swim: Bayou Lessons in Resilience

When it came to sink or swim in the Louisiana bayou, I wasn’t sure if it was a racial, gender, or generational thing? But — it was a story I often heard from older African American men who shared this childhood memory. It goes like this: A father or an older male relative taught them […]

Where Have All Our Colors Gone?

Where have all our colors gone? Cue the 1960s song Where Have All Our Flowers Gone by Peter, Paul and Mary… Where have all our colors gone, long time passing? Where have all our colors gone, long time ago?… Oh when will they ever learn, oh when will they ever learn? The stark realization that […]

Resolve or Regret: Rethinking Your New Year Resolutions

Time, and time again, we decide this time we’re gonna beat time, and accomplish all of our New Year resolutions. But in reality, we’re only setting ourselves up for failure—once more. As we inch closer to each new year, we welcome it with hopefulness. Yet at the same time, our heart quickens, even tightens. We […]

Head on the Chopping Block: Surviving Without Team Support

Have you ever had that dream—or perhaps, that nightmare—where you’re standing side by side with your coworkers, and then everyone takes one step backwards, and you don’t realize it? “Even from the beginning, it was apparent that beyond her steady reporting, she had a great feel for what was important in a story, and was particularly strong at shining a light on personalities, and could always be counted on to get to the deeper levels of the stories that people carry within them. ”

“There are many writers and editors who can competently put one word in front of another, but Ruth Foote is one of the rare writers who has a sense of the ‘soul’ of the story or article. Her wordcrafting ability, creativity, empathy, and intelligent wit was evident early-on — and has only sharpened since.”

“Her stories are engaging, offering a unique perspective into the thoughts and emotions of the people she profiles. Knowing that you’re getting information from a reliable source that does not infuse its own political views, but reports the news and stories as it should is rare, but Ruth Foote is an exception…”

After my family settled in my father's hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana, I later discovered a vibrant culture that inspired my passion for writing and community advocacy. I’ve channeled this passion into my work, from co-publishing Creole Magazine in the 1990s to authoring For Shakespeare's Stepchildren: 10 Essential Writing Tips and Techniques: Secrets of Successful Writers, available on Amazon now. And recently, I uploaded my thesis in book format, Just As Brutal But Without All the Fanfare: African American Students, Racism, and Defiance during the Desegregation of Southwestern Louisiana Institute, 1954-1964, which tells the inspirational story of the brave young men and women who desegregated the school, today known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. It became the first higher education institution to desegregate in the Deep South.
