The holidays barely have time to breathe before they’re replaced—nearly stomped out—as retailers race toward the next sale. One celebration blends into the next until you’re not quite sure what season you’re in anymore. You didn’t imagine it. But one thing is certain, they play on your addictions. Addictions occur also
Welcome!
As an award-winning journalist, historian, writer, and online entrepreneur, I’ve dedicated my life to sharing stories that shape our world. I believe in the power of words to convey dreams, ideas, and experiences. My journey as a writer began in an extraordinary childhood as an Army brat, experiencing the harmonious world Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., envisioned—a foundation that still informs my work today.

I dreaded public speaking since I was a child, and I have more than one reason. Besides getting butterflies in my stomach beforehand, whether for a class project or an area speech tournament in high school, I still carry trauma from the day my father insisted on being in the room

In seventh grade social studies, our teacher Mrs. Hebert (pronounced AY-bair here in Louisiana) had us to memorize every stanza of Lewis Carroll’s classic, The Walrus and The Carpenter, as a lesson on life, literature, and legacy: The time has come, the Walrus said, To talk of many things: Of shoes

Within seconds he had passed in front of me, seated in my car at the red light intersection, before my delayed reaction spotted him and tuned in that bright and sunny day. He walked at a fast pace, escorting an old bicycle on the sidewalk, as if he were escorting his

(Note: I wrote this piece as a guest blog for entrepreneur and mentor Connie Ragen Green’s Huge Profits Tiny List website. I was grateful for the opportunity. Since then, even the President has dropped F-bombs on national television and it did not seem to have fazed individuals — at least, publicly.
So, What Are You Going to Do About It?

Her words hit me which such force, I had to catch my breath. I had to draw in air. Her question — more like her demand — caught me off guard. Completely. It nearly knocked the wind out of me. It felt like a balloon does when it is deflated —

Knock, Knock: Are You Answering the Door for 2026?
Knock, knock… Each year, we pause—if only briefly—to acknowledge what we’ve accomplished. Some victories were large and life-altering. Others were quiet, personal, and just as meaningful. And yet—if we’re honest—there’s usually a cringe or two. Those lingering goals. The projects that didn’t quite make it across the finish line. You likely thought you had more […]

The Big Picture: Defining Your Life Goals for 2026 and Beyond
It’s not a fault. We grow accustomed to our immediate surroundings—our routines, our rhythms, our so-called comfort zones. Even those who venture farther than others often circle back to what feels familiar. But—we all tend to forget about the Big Picture. Some people thrive on challenge. They climb, leapfrog, and take risks—sometimes even taking everyone’s […]

You DO You: Stop Being a People Pleaser
A Diagnosis I Never Expected I never viewed myself as a People Pleaser. But it was a rude awakening when I took a personality test created by best-selling author Ruth Soukup—yes, my namesake. The results puzzled me. I was labeled not only a People Pleaser, but also an Outcast. Strangely enough, I wore the Outcast […]

Black Friday Blues: Has Holiday Shopping Losts Its Magic?
Once upon a time, Black Friday used to mean something. Much more than it means today. I recently found myself thinking such thoughts when I noticed that the shopping centers were not full, let alone overflowing, the day after Thanksgiving—as they had been in years past. Then a young comedian verified my feelings. He had […]

I believe in the power of words to convey dreams, ideas, and experiences. My journey as a writer began in an extraordinary childhood as an Army brat, experiencing the harmonious world Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., envisioned—a foundation that still informs my work today.
After my family settled in my father's hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana, I later discovered a vibrant culture that inspired my passion for writing and community advocacy. I’ve channeled this passion into my work, from co-publishing Creole Magazine in the 1990s to authoring For Shakespeare's Stepchildren: 10 Essential Writing Tips and Techniques: Secrets of Successful Writers, available on Amazon now. And recently, I uploaded my thesis in book format, Just As Brutal But Without All the Fanfare: African American Students, Racism, and Defiance during the Desegregation of Southwestern Louisiana Institute, 1954-1964, which tells the inspirational story of the brave young men and women who desegregated the school, today known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. It became the first higher education institution to desegregate in the Deep South.
