To Boldly Go: Lessons from Star Trek and Tomorrow
Star Trek taught us that we’re not alone. That was the mission of the Starship Enterprise, after all, according to Captain James T. Kirk’s iconic delivery in the TV show’s opening: To boldly go where no man has gone before. When the The Next Generation debuted, Captain Jean Luc Picard’s delivery was PC-induced: no man […]

Sink or Swim: Bayou Lessons in Resilience
When it came to sink or swim in the Louisiana bayou, I wasn’t sure if it was a racial, gender, or generational thing? But — it was a story I often heard from older African American men who shared this childhood memory. It goes like this: A father or an older male relative taught them […]

I believe in the power of words to convey dreams, ideas, and experiences. My journey as a writer began in an extraordinary childhood as an Army brat, experiencing the harmonious world Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., envisioned—a foundation that still informs my work today.
After my family settled in my father's hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana, I later discovered a vibrant culture that inspired my passion for writing and community advocacy. I’ve channeled this passion into my work, from co-publishing Creole Magazine in the 1990s to authoring For Shakespeare's Stepchildren: 10 Essential Writing Tips and Techniques: Secrets of Successful Writers, available on Amazon now. And recently, I uploaded my thesis in book format, Just As Brutal But Without All the Fanfare: African American Students, Racism, and Defiance during the Desegregation of Southwestern Louisiana Institute, 1954-1964, which tells the inspirational story of the brave young men and women who desegregated the school, today known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. It became the first higher education institution to desegregate in the Deep South.
