The holidays barely have time to breathe before they’re replaced—nearly stomped out—as retailers race toward the next sale. One celebration blends into the next until you’re not quite sure what season you’re in anymore. You didn’t imagine it. But one thing is certain, they play on your addictions. Addictions occur also

As an award-winning journalist, historian, writer, and online entrepreneur, I’ve dedicated my life to sharing stories that shape our world. I believe in the power of words to convey dreams, ideas, and experiences. Sink or Swim: Bayou Lessons in Resilience
- Ruth Anita Foote

Where have all our colors gone? Cue the 1960s song Where Have All Our Flowers Gone by Peter, Paul and Mary… Where have all our colors gone, long time passing? Where have all our colors gone, long time ago?… Oh when will they ever learn, oh when will they ever learn?

Time, and time again, we decide this time we’re gonna beat time, and accomplish all of our New Year resolutions. But in reality, we’re only setting ourselves up for failure—once more. As we inch closer to each new year, we welcome it with hopefulness. Yet at the same time, our heart

Have you ever had that dream—or perhaps, that nightmare—where you’re standing side by side with your coworkers, and then everyone takes one step backwards, and you don’t realize it? And you’re left to face the boss—alone, your head on the chopping block? Or has it already become a reality? Either way,

Crying over spilled milk IS a waste of your energy. I said it—but it needed to be said. Of course, we’re all guilty of doing it. But the one thing we have to accept is that we can either clean it up or spend time gazing at it lying there and

So, What Are You Going to Do About It?
Her words hit me which such force, I had to catch my breath. I had to draw in air. Her question — more like her demand — caught me off guard. Completely. It nearly knocked the wind out of me. It felt like a balloon does when it is deflated — that is, if it […]

The Good Samaritan Understood the Assignment: But — Do We Practice What We Preach?
The Good Samaritan had an assignment to do. He understood the assignment. He completed the task. He did not ponder, or question what he had to do. He did not analyze it. He did not a flip a coin. He acted without hesitation. He responded, a simple reflex. Like inhaling. What can we learn from […]

Is Age Just a Number? Breaking Down Stereotypes and Embracing Ageless Vitality
He looked at me in horror. Add in pure disgust, too. But — I thought the Bible said not to judge, and he was a pastor. He was my coworker also. He had come around the corner just in time to hear us giggling like teenagers about the upcoming Nelly concert. Our Country Grammar idol […]

Sugar, Spice, and a 3rd Grade Fight: What a Childhood Bully’s Threat Taught Me
“I’m gonna beat you up on the last day of school,” he said. I wasn’t quite sure how to respond. How do you respond? To that? I had been on the planet for less than a decade, and my life was in jeopardy. Yet it had not been an overt threat. There was no malice […]

Too Far From the Light: Dylan Doesn’t Live Here Anymore
Dylan died as he lived: His lover clinging to his arm. That is how I heard the police found him: The syringe hanging out. He was most likely another victim of Fentanyl. The phantom drug had struck down so many young people in our community, and across the country, even though I wasn’t quite sure […]

I believe in the power of words to convey dreams, ideas, and experiences. My journey as a writer began in an extraordinary childhood as an Army brat, experiencing the harmonious world Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., envisioned—a foundation that still informs my work today.
After my family settled in my father's hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana, I later discovered a vibrant culture that inspired my passion for writing and community advocacy. I’ve channeled this passion into my work, from co-publishing Creole Magazine in the 1990s to authoring For Shakespeare's Stepchildren: 10 Essential Writing Tips and Techniques: Secrets of Successful Writers, available on Amazon now. And recently, I uploaded my thesis in book format, Just As Brutal But Without All the Fanfare: African American Students, Racism, and Defiance during the Desegregation of Southwestern Louisiana Institute, 1954-1964, which tells the inspirational story of the brave young men and women who desegregated the school, today known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. It became the first higher education institution to desegregate in the Deep South.
