Time to Break Up—and Let the Addictions Go

The holidays barely have time to breathe before they’re replaced—nearly stomped out—as retailers race toward the next sale. One celebration blends into the next until you’re not quite sure what season you’re in anymore. You didn’t imagine it. But one thing is certain, they play on your addictions. Addictions occur also

Welcome!

As an award-winning journalist, historian, writer, and online entrepreneur, I’ve dedicated my life to sharing stories that shape our world. I believe in the power of words to convey dreams, ideas, and experiences. My journey as a writer began in an extraordinary childhood as an Army brat, experiencing the harmonious world Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., envisioned—a foundation that still informs my work today.

Fired to Fired Up: How ‘Getting Fired’ Can Turn Sorrows of Setbacks into Blessings of Success!

Steve Jobs. Oprah Winfrey. Walt Disney. J.K. Rowlings. Albert Einstein. Richard Branson. Bill Gates. And Mark Cuban. We may never have heard of these names, these epitomes of success who are mostly billionaires, if they had not gotten fired at some point in their life. Imagine that? If you bear that

Pros and Cons of Multitasking: Can We Walk and Chew Gum at the Same Time?

Like defiant children, we fool ourselves into thinking that we can get more done by multitasking, and so off we go to tasking — eager to get things done, and eager once again, to make our lists. Those infamous lists. Those never-ending lists. Those never-get-done lists. Have any lists cluttering up

The Homeless Man’s Decision: Everyday Lessons on the Thin Line between Choice and Regret

Time ticked away, but he did not fear time that night. Perhaps, he ordered another drink at the bar, or just sat in silence, somewhat defiant, as seconds turned into minutes. The homeless man did not worry about his looming curfew, nor an imaginary coach turning into a pumpkin. His mode

Captain Your Time: Taking Control When It Goes into Warp Speed

“Time stays long enough for anyone who will use it.” — Leonardo da Vinci* I have been waiting, and as patiently as possible, to hear that we have warp time in place — that man has discovered how to speed up time. Just to confirm my suspicions. And moreover, that

The Power of Boundaries in Boosting Your Life and Productivity

Recognizing that I was working my nonprofit job in two phases did not stop me from halting the destructive behavior even though my mental and physical capabilities were stretched to the limit. More than a little peeved and a lot worn out, they pulled the plug for me instead. Otherwise, I

To Boldly Go: Lessons from Star Trek and Tomorrow

Star Trek taught us that we’re not alone. That was the mission of the Starship Enterprise, after all, according to Captain James T. Kirk’s iconic delivery in the TV show’s opening: To boldly go where no man has gone before. When the The Next Generation debuted, Captain Jean Luc Picard’s delivery was PC-induced: no man […]

Sink or Swim: Bayou Lessons in Resilience

When it came to sink or swim in the Louisiana bayou, I wasn’t sure if it was a racial, gender, or generational thing? But — it was a story I often heard from older African American men who shared this childhood memory. It goes like this: A father or an older male relative taught them […]

Where Have All Our Colors Gone?

Where have all our colors gone? Cue the 1960s song Where Have All Our Flowers Gone by Peter, Paul and Mary… Where have all our colors gone, long time passing? Where have all our colors gone, long time ago?… Oh when will they ever learn, oh when will they ever learn? The stark realization that […]

Resolve or Regret: Rethinking Your New Year Resolutions

Time, and time again, we decide this time we’re gonna beat time, and accomplish all of our New Year resolutions. But in reality, we’re only setting ourselves up for failure—once more. As we inch closer to each new year, we welcome it with hopefulness. Yet at the same time, our heart quickens, even tightens. We […]

Head on the Chopping Block: Surviving Without Team Support

Have you ever had that dream—or perhaps, that nightmare—where you’re standing side by side with your coworkers, and then everyone takes one step backwards, and you don’t realize it? Testimonials

“Even from the beginning, it was apparent that beyond her steady reporting, she had a great feel for what was important in a story, and was particularly strong at shining a light on personalities, and could always be counted on to get to the deeper levels of the stories that people carry within them. ”

“There are many writers and editors who can competently put one word in front of another, but Ruth Foote is one of the rare writers who has a sense of the ‘soul’ of the story or article. Her wordcrafting ability, creativity, empathy, and intelligent wit was evident early-on — and has only sharpened since.”

“Her stories are engaging, offering a unique perspective into the thoughts and emotions of the people she profiles. Knowing that you’re getting information from a reliable source that does not infuse its own political views, but reports the news and stories as it should is rare, but Ruth Foote is an exception…”

After my family settled in my father's hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana, I later discovered a vibrant culture that inspired my passion for writing and community advocacy. I’ve channeled this passion into my work, from co-publishing Creole Magazine in the 1990s to authoring For Shakespeare's Stepchildren: 10 Essential Writing Tips and Techniques: Secrets of Successful Writers, available on Amazon now. And recently, I uploaded my thesis in book format, Just As Brutal But Without All the Fanfare: African American Students, Racism, and Defiance during the Desegregation of Southwestern Louisiana Institute, 1954-1964, which tells the inspirational story of the brave young men and women who desegregated the school, today known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. It became the first higher education institution to desegregate in the Deep South.
