Welcome!
As an award-winning journalist, historian, writer, and online entrepreneur, I’ve dedicated my life to sharing stories that shape our world. I believe in the power of words to convey dreams, ideas, and experiences. My journey as a writer began in an extraordinary childhood as an Army brat, experiencing the harmonious world Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., envisioned—a foundation that still informs my work today.

Knock, knock… Each year, we pause—if only briefly—to acknowledge what we’ve accomplished. Some victories were large and life-altering. Others were quiet, personal, and just as meaningful. And yet—if we’re honest—there’s usually a cringe or two. Those lingering goals. The projects that didn’t quite make it across the finish line. You likely

It’s not a fault. We grow accustomed to our immediate surroundings—our routines, our rhythms, our so-called comfort zones. Even those who venture farther than others often circle back to what feels familiar. But—we all tend to forget about the Big Picture. Some people thrive on challenge. They climb, leapfrog, and take
You DO You: Stop Being a People Pleaser

A Diagnosis I Never Expected I never viewed myself as a People Pleaser. But it was a rude awakening when I took a personality test created by best-selling author Ruth Soukup—yes, my namesake. The results puzzled me. I was labeled not only a People Pleaser, but also an Outcast. Strangely enough,
Black Friday Blues: Has Holiday Shopping Losts Its Magic?

Once upon a time, Black Friday used to mean something. Much more than it means today. I recently found myself thinking such thoughts when I noticed that the shopping centers were not full, let alone overflowing, the day after Thanksgiving—as they had been in years past. Then a young comedian verified
Prep or Pressure: Are you an Early Bird or Last-Minute?

Are you the early bird, or the last-minute person? There’s rarely an in-between. It’s either-or—that’s all. Take it or leave it—but that’s the way it usually is. And while you may gravitate toward one pole more than the other, most of us know ourselves well enough to admit we lean heavily

The Power of Boundaries in Boosting Your Life and Productivity
Recognizing that I was working my nonprofit job in two phases did not stop me from halting the destructive behavior even though my mental and physical capabilities were stretched to the limit. Mastering Simplicity vs. Complexity: Strategies for Success in Business, Career and Personal Life
I did not learn how to drive until I was 25 years old. That is considered old, especially in Louisiana where individuals were driving at age 10 a few generations ago. Might not have been legal, and also, it took place in mostly rural areas. An interviewee once shared with me how she drove the […]

“I Have No Friends”: Building an Online Business as a New or Seasoned Entrepreneur
Her words hung in the air. And hovered over us in loud silence. They were deafening. You really wished that she had never uttered them because you were floored — you were not sure how to react. Who on earth admits to such a thing? And yet, the student worker made the statement as if […]

I believe in the power of words to convey dreams, ideas, and experiences. My journey as a writer began in an extraordinary childhood as an Army brat, experiencing the harmonious world Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., envisioned—a foundation that still informs my work today.
After my family settled in my father's hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana, I later discovered a vibrant culture that inspired my passion for writing and community advocacy. I’ve channeled this passion into my work, from co-publishing Creole Magazine in the 1990s to authoring For Shakespeare's Stepchildren: 10 Essential Writing Tips and Techniques: Secrets of Successful Writers, available on Amazon now. And recently, I uploaded my thesis in book format, Just As Brutal But Without All the Fanfare: African American Students, Racism, and Defiance during the Desegregation of Southwestern Louisiana Institute, 1954-1964, which tells the inspirational story of the brave young men and women who desegregated the school, today known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. It became the first higher education institution to desegregate in the Deep South.
